Dr. Deepa S. Vasudevan

American Institutes for Research

Dr. Deepa S. Vasudevan is a researcher at the American Institutes for Research in the youth, family, and community development program area. Her scholarship explores the working lives of community-based youth workers, youth experiences in out-of-school time programming, school-community partnerships, and the organizational culture of nonprofits. Previous to joining AIR, Deepa taught as a lecturer in education at Wellesley College with a focus on the sociopolitical dynamics of schooling, education policy, and community-based youth programs. She is the co-editor of the volume, At Our Best: Building Youth-Adult Partnerships in Out-of-School Time Settings, which is part of the Information Age Publishing Out-of-School Time series.

Diane Hsieh is a Research Scientist at Search Institute, an applied research nonprofit organization that focuses on positive youth development. Diane's research interests include academic motivation and organized after-school activities.

Dr. Ishmael Miller

Ishmael Miller has his Ph.D in Educational Policy, Organizations, and Leadership from the University of Washington-Seattle (UW). Dr. Miller is a Presidential Postdoctoral Fellow in the Division of Educational Leadership and Innovation at Arizona State University, Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College. Dr. Miller's research examines two areas: (1) how anti-Blackness manifests in educational leadership practice and describes ways Black communities disrupt their continued oppression. (2) PK - 12 Equity Director leadership practice. Recent recognition for Dr. Miller's work as an educational leader includes being named a 2023 Practitioner of Distinction by The University of Mississippi School of Education. As a scholar, Dr. Miller was awarded the 2023 Dissertation of the Year Award by the American Educational Research Association, Leadership for Social Justice Special Interest Group.

Dr. Tanya Wiggins

Dr. Wiggins has nearly 25 years of experience as an educator. She bridges research and practice by exploring the triumphs and challenges of community-based youth organizations as educational spaces.

Sabrina J. Curtis, PhD is Assistant Professor in the Youth and Social Innovation Program in the School of Education and Human Development at the University of Virginia. Her teaching, research, and community-facing work centers on youth civic engagement and sociopolitical development, gender equity in education, Black feminist pedagogies, and the politics of Black girl girlhood.

Laura Peña -Telfer

Laura Peña-Telfer is a Doctoral Student in Teaching and Learning with a Science Concentration at Georgia State University. Her work is centered on bringing authentic STEM learning experiences to Black and Latina girls in urban contexts by leveraging the rich funds of knowledge already present within families and the community. Laura is currently a STEM Program Specialist and Science Instructional Coach at a public all-girls 6-12 school in Atlanta, Georgia. She holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Florida and a Master of Science in Education and Social Change from the University of Miami.
